Air valves are mechanisms that are installed on the pipes to automatically remove air that may exist in a network, reducing pipe burst during water hammers or to prevent water from not circulating correctly because the air can form a plug or reduce the passage of flow. There are three kinds of air valves according to their functions:
• Single function, also called pressure air release valve, allows the elimination of pressure air when the pipe is under pressure.
• Double function, allows inflow and outflow of large amounts of air without pressure, through a large orifice.
• Triple function, it is the synthesis of the two.
For the air valve sizing, we must take into account the flow of air to be exhausted and/or the air to enter the pipe. We should choose the appropriate Size as a function of water flow for filling or emptying the pipeline.
